Where does the “Nihilism meme” meme come from?
The term 'Nihilism' does not refer to a single meme with a precise audiovisual origin; its exact source remains unknown. Know Your Meme catalogs a broader culture of nihilistic memes, with one ancient example being a legendary graffiti attributed to May 1968 protests in Paris. A documented milestone is the October 6, 2006, publication of the comic *Nihilism* by xkcd, discussing cosmic meaninglessness. Later, Veritasium uploaded *Our Greatest Delusion* to YouTube, exploring intellectual benefits of acceptance. Creators then repurposed these ideas by overlaying dark text on GIFs or film captures to create existential anti-jokes.
