Where does the “X Plays the Tambourine” meme come from?
The meme originates from the ending theme of the Japanese anime *Working’!!* (titled *Wagnaria’!!* in North America). The scene features Aoi Yamada and Hiroomi Sōma playing tambourines in rhythm behind Sōta Takanashi. The series aired in Japan starting on October 1, 2011, with this ending present from the first episode. Popularity surged on the platform Niconico Douga in October 2011. The first noted remix is a looping video using the song “Always Love & Peace!!”, uploaded by user Shinra-P on October 17, 2011. In Japanese, it is called “Tambourine o Tataiteru Dake” (“they are just hitting the tambourine”) or “Série ‘they are just hitting’”.
