What does the “Oh Samuel” meme mean?
“Oh Samuel” fits when you respond to a grand claim, made with total assurance, that you only half believe. The tone is a fond sigh: you do not really dispute it, but you let it be known the claim is bold. The phrase suits an embellished memory, an overly optimistic prediction, or a friend’s “we could have won”. It also carries the closeness of a talk between athletes, where teasing is part of the bond.
Where does the “Oh Samuel” meme come from?
The scene comes from “The Bridge”, the show hosted by Samuel Eto’o, where the former Cameroonian striker welcomes Aurélien Tchouaméni, Cédric Doumbé, Mike Maignan and Redouane Bougheraba. Eto’o recounts that Cameroon had a team good enough to win the 2002 World Cup. Tchouaméni, a French international footballer, answers with a half-amused, half-doubtful “Oh Samuel”. The exchange was clipped on YouTube under titles like “Orh Samuel (Tchouameni à Eto’o)” and “Samuel Eto’o se fait terminer par Tchouaméni”. The clip soon became a reply to any good-natured bragging.
