“Canicule Hmmmm Canicule” meme: meaning, origin and epic card

What does the “Canicule Hmmmm Canicule” meme mean?

The meme plays on the contrast between a heatwave everyone is suffering through and the swagger of someone claiming not to feel it. The famous “big ice cube on my head” delivers the punchline: the claimed indifference comes from something absurd. People use it as soon as the thermometer climbs, under a photo of a street baking in the sun, or to answer someone moaning about the heat. The long “hmmmm”, which lets the doubt hang before naming the heatwave, is a large part of the charm.

Where does the “Canicule Hmmmm Canicule” meme come from?

The line has been around since 2019. That year France lived through a historic heatwave: at the end of June and the start of July, the country passed the 45 °C mark for the first time, with a record 46 °C measured at Vérargues, in the Hérault. The sentence, which mocks extreme heat with its ice cube on the head, settled in as a reflex of every summer and comes back with each new hot spell, detached from its original clip.
