What does the “Droitier ou gaucher ?” meme mean?
This meme expresses deliberate ambiguity or hesitation in the face of a binary choice. It uses Dembélé’s confused answer to gently mock anyone who refuses to take a clear stance. The humor lies in the contrast between the simplicity of the question and the complexity of the answer, often highlighting a form of communicative awkwardness or evasive strategy in simple situations.
Where does the “Droitier ou gaucher ?” meme come from?
The origin dates back to an interview conducted in 2016 by Canal+, during Ousmane Dembélé's professional beginnings at Rennes. A journalist asks him if he is right-handed or left-handed. The player first answers that he is “more left-handed,” before clarifying that he shoots better with his right foot. The exact date of recording, the journalist's name, and the specific show name remain unknown according to available sources. The scene, distributed on YouTube, highlights the young man’s ambidexterity at age 18. His apparent confusion between the two feet turned this exchange into a comedic sequence. Although Dembélé later confirmed he preferred shooting right for better accuracy, the initial hesitation remained embedded in internet culture as a symbol of indecision.
