In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Overlord Manatee” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22500 of the collection, and the 79th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Overlord Manatee” meme mean?
The joke rests on contrast: a gentle, slow animal cast as an all-powerful tyrant facing a tiny, terrified child. Captions give it despot speeches, theatrical threats or quotes from famous villains. People use it to exaggerate silly domination, to play world ruler, or to mock a power struggle. The humor comes from the gap between a straight-faced photo and the melodramatic tone of the text. The result is a villain whose menace is entirely borrowed from the caption.
Where does the “Overlord Manatee” meme come from?

That same day a captioned version on r/AdviceAnimals gave the series its name, Overlord Manatee. On May 28, 2012, the blog Modern Primate ran the first batch of images, with several sites following. The meme then moved on to Tumblr, FunnyJunk and Quickmeme, where captions cast the manatee as either an evil ruler or a prisoner.
