In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Papi est mort, Karting” is a legendary card of the Memes FR pack, number 3940 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3511 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Papi est mort, Karting” meme mean?
The meme gets its effect from the clash of two registers: a grave sentence, “grandpa is dead,” and a leisure word, “karting.” Jonathan Cohen, in La Flamme, plays the mismatch with a deadpan confidence that is funny because of its awkwardness. People use it to defuse a clumsy situation, to mock someone who announces a tragedy with no transition, or to hijack a serious conversation. It is dry dark humor, kept for friends who share the taste.
Where does the “Papi est mort, Karting” meme come from?
The line comes from La Flamme, the parody series in which Jonathan Cohen plays a central part. The passage mixing a grandfather’s death with a karting activity was cut out as a clip, then reused on social networks as a recyclable formula. It is shared as video or as a plain caption, alone or paired with a picture of the actor.
