Where does the “Lots of Kevins and Mattéos” meme come from?
The catchphrase originates from a hearing held before the French Senate’s Legal Affairs Committee on July 5, 2023. Questioned about the identities of suspects detained during nationwide riots following the death of Nahel, then-Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin stated: “there were lots of Kevins and Mattéos, if I may say so.” His goal was to counter claims tying the unrest purely to immigration, noting that most detainees were French nationals with an average age around seventeen.
