What does the “Pregnancy Announcement” meme mean?
This format expresses humor through incongruity: attributing pregnancy to an unfit character (male, child, object). The emotion is comedic surprise. It is used to joke about imaginary or real births in pop culture contexts, creating a contrast between the medical test and the fictional universe.
Where does the “Pregnancy Announcement” meme come from?
The process emerged as a small trend on the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel (2chan) during summer 2014. Its widespread diffusion became visible when the blank template was posted on Twitter by user @Gorxxx_ on October 15, 2014. The platform, author, and date are documented; the specific broadcast or audiovisual scene originating the model remains unknown. A hypothesis mentioning an anime or YouTube video exists but is not established by consulted sources. The subversion consists of giving a character a pregnancy announcement, often associating the positive test with another character's expressive reaction. The desired effect is generally humorous or incongruous, and the model has been applied to anime characters, but also to movie characters, real celebrities, and characters of various genders. The meme spread on Twitter, Tumblr, and DeviantArt, then into Japanese communities like pixiv and Nico Nico Seiga, notably with Japanese hashtags #妊娠検査薬コラ and English #PregnancyAnnouncement.
