What does the “Prom Night Dumpster Baby” meme mean?
This meme embodies absolute dark humor through the contrast between a macabre scene and an catchy melody. It refers to the specific sequence or, by extension, any joke deemed too cynical or inappropriate. The dominant emotion is nervous laughter at the absurdity of misfortune, typical of Seth MacFarlane’s style. It is used to highlight total disregard for conventional social norms.
Where does the “Prom Night Dumpster Baby” meme come from?
The gag comes from the 'Airport ’07' episode of Season 5 of the animated series Family Guy. The sequence shows a young mother throwing her baby into a bin near a prom. The infant, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, sings a nostalgic song about his plight. This sketch is directly inspired by the case of Melissa Drexler, who gave birth in a prom bathroom in New Jersey in June 1997 before killing her child. Creators often conflated this event with that of Amy Grossberg, whose baby was found in a dumpster in 1997 as well.
