This format expresses dark humor or absurdity by subverting serious official guidelines. It depicts incongruous situations, often shocking or exaggerated, in the guise of behavioral recommendations. Where does the “Queensland Rail Etiquette Posters” meme come from?
The origin traces back to a real communication campaign by Queensland Rail, the railway operator in Queensland, Australia. Titled #trainetiquette, this initiative aimed to reduce fifteen types of undesirable behaviors on Brisbane trains. While some documents cite 2011 as the year of social popularity, an advertising source specifies August 2012 for widespread dissemination. The original posters combined realistic photographs with prescriptive texts deemed awkward by the public. This serious yet strange appearance prompted internet users to hijack the format. They kept the visual structure while replacing educational messages with satirical captions. The phenomenon spread via web archives, including a snapshot dated December 17, 2012, and platforms like CollegeHumor, without a single identified creator.
- 2011The #trainetiquette campaign becomes the most popular social topic for Queensland Rail.
- August 2012An advertising source dates the wide dissemination of the good manners awareness campaign.
- December 17, 2012The original poster pages are digitally archived, preserving the source format.
