In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Sealand” is a common card of the Memes World series 75, number 22294 of the collection, and the 151st best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Sealand” meme mean?
This meme relies on the contrast between official grandeur and physical insignificance. It expresses amusement at an independence declaration perceived as fanciful or illegal by neighbors. It is used to mock any entity taking itself seriously while being negligible, or to illustrate a situation where one tries to control something trivial with total authority.
Where does the “Sealand” meme come from?
The meme is based on the real history of the Principality of Sealand. On September 2, 1967, Paddy Roy Bates occupied the HM Fort Roughs in the North Sea and declared it a sovereign nation. This abandoned military platform, covering about 0.004 km², is not recognized by any UN member state. Internet users adopted this historical anecdote to create a humorous narrative. Users share images of the fort and fake official documents to highlight the paradox of a country without permanent residents or international recognition. Virality stems from the absurdity of this self-proclamation made from an isolated metal structure.
How to use the “Sealand” meme
- Share an image of the fort to illustrate a personal project deemed too ambitious for its means.
- Comment on a minor dispute where parties invoke strict rules for a trivial stake.
- Highlight the hypocrisy of an organization that puts on airs of power despite its small size.
