Where does the “Smokin' Jay Cutler” meme come from?
The phenomenon originated on Tumblr on September 14, 2012, via the blog 'Smokin’ Jay Cutler', created by Brandon Freeberg. It relied on a video sequence from September 13, 2012, where Cutler, playing for the Chicago Bears, appeared to shout at then ignore teammate J’Marcus Webb after a shoulder hit. Creators manipulated these images to insert a cigarette, accentuating the athlete's closed-off look. The site defined itself as dedicated to the 'most apathetic athlete in sports history'. Virality relied on the simplicity of the edit and resonance with Cutler’s perceived attitude, without a specific TV broadcast identified as the sole source.
