In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Snel hest” is a rare card of the Memes World series 72, number 21592 of the collection, and the 241st best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Snel hest” meme mean?
This meme expresses voluntary absurdity and childlike joy. It turns a mundane sentence into mysterious gibberish that evokes digital naivety. Users employ it to mark simple satisfaction, like petting an imaginary animal, or to highlight the strange, unexplained nature of old internet phenomena.
Where does the “Snel hest” meme come from?
The meme appeared around 2004 on the internet, likely in an IRC channel linked to the Swedish humorous site flabba.nu. The presumed author is a user named Magicalvara, though this is unconfirmed. The original Swedish expression is snäll häst, meaning “nice horse” or “good horse.” The spelling “snel hest” deliberately distorts the words to mimic a Germanic accent or lolcat style. The associated image often shows a horse with a fixed gaze, sometimes with a human head or a black turtleneck, but its exact origin remains unknown. The phenomenon grew through playful variants, such as “horse mathematics,” where elements like oats or pets were added to create fictional emotional states. In 2005, netizens flooded the phone line of Henrik Pontén, a member of Antipiratbyrån, by sending “klapa snel hest” (“pet the nice horse”) en masse, causing temporary media buzz around hacking and absurd humor.
