“Starfoullah water” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “Starfoullah water” meme mean?

This meme expresses an urgent need to wash one’s eyes after seeing something horrible or disgusting. Combining the distorted Arabic term with water creates an absurd image: drinking or pouring water would remove traumatic scenes from one’s retina. It is an exaggerated, comedic reaction to visual shock.

Where does the “Starfoullah water” meme come from?

The meme originates from the French show Les Douze Coups de midi. In a specific segment, voiceover Zette explains the word 'starfoullah' to a contestant named Hugo. He suggests an Arabic origin, and Zette validates an approximate definition before concluding with the exclamation. 'Starfoullah' is a phonetic deformation of 'astaghfirullah', literally meaning 'I ask forgiveness from Allah'. In common usage, this expression serves as an interjection to mark surprise or indignation. The 'Starfoullah water' edit pairs this audio clip with the idea of purifying water. The exact source of this combination remains unknown, as does the precise upload date of the original video online.
