In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Steve Buscemeyes” is an epic card of the Memes World series 70, number 20904 of the collection, and the 92nd best-known meme of its 243 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Steve Buscemeyes” meme mean?
The comedy stems from extreme visual incongruity. By keeping a celebrity’s facial structure but inserting Buscemi’s distinct, wide-eyed look, the image conveys silent disbelief or shock. It transforms serious or glamorous portraits into expressions of mock astonishment. The humor lies in the deliberate violation of aesthetic norms to produce immediate laughter through cognitive dissonance.
Where does the “Steve Buscemeyes” meme come from?
Documented origins trace back to April 2, 2011, on the humor site Something Awful, during a Photoshop Friday contest called 'Celebrity Match Game'. An image pairing Steve Buscemi with Justin Bieber started the trend, though the creator remains anonymous. On April 7, 2011, it appeared on Reddit’s r/funny subreddit as 'Justin Bieber with Steve Buscemi Eyes'. The next day, the Tumblr blog Chicks With Steve Buscemeyes launched, focusing on female celebrities. On April 12, YouTuber TexPorneau uploaded a video titled 'Buscemi Eyes' showcasing examples. The meme gained traction across these platforms before Buscemi himself reacted to it on June 10, 2014, during Late Night with Seth Meyers.
