What does the “Super Smash Bros Character Predictions” meme mean?
The core emotion blends anticipation with cynicism about the constant rumor mill. The format mocks the difficulty of predicting roster additions, especially after third-party licenses were introduced. Users share absurd characters to joke about unrealistic expectations and emphasize that the final list always remains a surprise, defying logical casting choices.
Where does the “Super Smash Bros Character Predictions” meme come from?
The documented origin lies on YTMND in May 2006. On May 10, 2006, user Bendillin posted a parody titled 'Super Smash Bros. Brawl Newcomer: John Madden!'. This creation replaced an official character with American sports commentator John Madden. This release coincided with the reveal of Solid Snake in the E3 2006 trailer, marking the first third-party fighter in the series history. Speculation expanded through fake 'Challenger Approaching' screens and biographical pages mimicking Nintendo's official style. These distortions exploit the hype for casting surprises by proposing intentionally incongruous names, turning official anticipation into a collective humorous guessing game.
