What does the “Tai Lung chokbar” meme mean?
Tai Lung is a fearsome snow leopard and the signature opponent of Kung Fu Panda. Attaching “chokbar” to him, a word that evokes strangling holds, imagines the invincible warrior beaten at his own game. The feeling is comic surprise: the threat turns into the victim. People use it to comment on a spectacular defeat, a botched wrestling move, a fighting game where someone gets trapped, or just to exaggerate the fall of a character who seemed untouchable.
Where does the “Tai Lung chokbar” meme come from?
Tai Lung is the main antagonist of the first Kung Fu Panda film, a proud warrior who breaks out of prison to claim the title of Dragon Warrior. He returns in later franchise content, including Kung Fu Panda 4. “Chokebar” comes from combat sports vocabulary and means a choke hold. On social networks, clips and edits blend the character’s image with grappling references, which produced this pairing. The deliberately elliptical title is enough to get the joke across.
