In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “The Shadowman” is a rare card of the Memes World series 69, number 20478 of the collection, and the 21st best-known meme of its 112 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “The Shadowman” meme mean?
The meme runs on the contrast between the Shadowman's sung threat and his instant, comic defeat the moment light appears - all it takes is an “Ahh, the light!” to neutralize him. On TikTok, the clip works as an editing template: the “Shadowman” part gets paired with a problem, an annoyance or bad news, and the “the light!” line marks its sudden, positive resolution. The character, played by Mark Bonanno, gets reused outside his original context as a pure reaction meme, with most users unaware of the show he's from.
Where does the “The Shadowman” meme come from?
The Shadowman (or “Shädowmän”) is a character from Hug the Sun, an Australian parody web series shot as found footage, imagining a 1990s children's show run by a sun-worshipping cult. Created by Xavier Michelides and Ben Russell, produced in part by comedy trio Aunty Donna, and released on YouTube channel Grouse House starting in 2021, the series features this all-black, spiked character, played by Mark Bonanno, summoned by a ritual in the episode “The Dark World.” He sings his own threat before another character repels him by shouting “Ahh, the light!” Lifted out of the show, this exchange became a widely shared TikTok meme format used to illustrate any problem resolved in an instant.
