What does the “The Umbrella Academy” meme mean?
This visual captures the irony of a toxic or unstable family dynamic. It expresses the idea that some groups respond to chaos with negligence or absurd humor rather than gravity. Klaus's dance symbolizes this carefree attitude toward total collapse, turning an apocalypse into mere background noise for personal squabbles.
Where does the “The Umbrella Academy” meme come from?
The TV series The Umbrella Academy, adapted from the comic created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, has been streamed by Netflix since February 15, 2019. The image comes from the first episode, where the seven adopted children dance separately to Tiffany's I Think We’re Alone Now. Showrunner Steve Blackman stated he wanted to show their quest for belonging. Robert Sheehan, who plays Klaus, noted he did not fully grasp the initial meaning of the choreography. The meme spread by repurposing this sequence to comment on troubled family relationships, although the exact origin of the associated text remains unidentified in consulted digital archives.
