It is used to illustrate situations where demand far exceeds supply, creating fierce competition among consumers willing to pay any price for the coveted item.

Where does the “Tickle Me Elmo” meme come from?

The Tickle Me Elmo plush was designed by Tyco Toys and released in July 1996. The major cultural phenomenon began in October 1996 during a television appearance on The Rosie O’Donnell Show. The host distributed samples to the audience, triggering immediate and massive demand. Stores quickly ran out of stock entirely. General press amplified this tension by labeling the toy essential then impossible to find. This media coverage transformed the item into a major commercial stake for the 1996 holiday season, generating exorbitant speculative sales online.
