“TikTok Girl” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “TikTok Girl” meme mean?

The meme evokes a musical attempt that the public mostly met with puzzlement, even mockery. People use it to comment on a track they find botched, to gently tease an overly earnest song, or to illustrate the gap between ambition and result. The title also keeps an ironic value for the duo’s fans, who treat it as a running gag: the two creators made a video about the single themselves, titled “On pensait que TikTok Girl serait un énorme hit” (“We thought TikTok Girl would be a huge hit”). The reference is as affectionate as it is mocking.

Where does the “TikTok Girl” meme come from?

David Coscas (Mcfly, born 7 July 1986) and Raphaël Carlier (Carlito, born 30 August 1986) are French web creators, comedians and musicians. Their YouTube channel was relaunched in 2016. The single “TikTok Girl” dates from 2021 and appears on their album “Notre meilleur album”, which also includes “Je scrolle”. According to Wikipedia, the track was accused of sexism, and the duo replied in a comment that they could still improve and that songs may not please everyone. The official video is available on their channel, and the title has since been reused in edits and jokes by internet users, including around live events such as the Zevent.
