“Wow qu’est-ce que c’est que ce truc là” meme: meaning, origin and rare card

What does the “Wow qu’est-ce que c’est que ce truc là” meme mean?

The line expresses pure astonishment, that of someone meeting an object or phenomenon they cannot make sense of. In Sylvain Durif’s mouth it takes on a mystical, offbeat tone, which turned it into a ready-made reaction for images that leave people speechless: a strange photo, a dubious gadget, an absurd scene. People use it to say that a piece of content is out of this world, with a smile rather than aggression. The meme works in writing as well as an audio clip.

Where does the “Wow qu’est-ce que c’est que ce truc là” meme come from?

Sylvain Durif, born on 23 August 1969 in Nantua, is a French video maker known as the “Cosmic Christ”. He drew attention in December 2012, when around 250 journalists flocked to Bugarach, in the Aude, for the end date of the Mayan calendar. In 2013 he ran in the municipal elections in Arques, in the Aude, and got 7 votes. In 2016 the web creator Amixem devoted a video to him, which widened his audience. His clips were then cut into short sequences, including this exclamation, shared on YouTube by meme channels. French press also reports him as a 2027 presidential candidate, which keeps his videos in circulation.
