“Tu mens ! Il ment !” meme: meaning, origin and epic card

What does the “Tu mens ! Il ment !” meme mean?

The line refuses an explanation before hearing it. People use it to describe someone who repeats an accusation louder instead of answering the argument, or to mock a conversation going in circles. The double move does the work: the policeman speaks first to the accused, then turns to the room to call it as his witness, as though the case were closed. It became the meme of cheerful bad faith, the kind that turns suspicion into proof by sheer force of tone.

Where does the “Tu mens ! Il ment !” meme come from?

Fantômas, directed by André Hunebelle and released in 1964, is the first of the three films that set commissaire Juve, played by Louis de Funès, against the reporter Fandor, played by Jean Marais, in an investigation built around the masked character created in the early twentieth century by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain. Juve is the loud policeman, certain he holds the answer and unable to listen to anyone. In the sequence that became a classic, Fandor tries to explain himself and is interrupted at every word. The Fantômas films have been replayed on French television for decades, which planted the line in common memory long before the internet, where it shrank to a few seconds reusable as a reply.
