What does the “Un visage Rubicon” meme mean?

The expression describes a situation where a simple question gets a confused, rambling or inaudible answer. “Un visage Rubicon” is used to mock an exchange that spirals, a garbled speech or someone who can no longer express themselves. The comedy comes from the gap between the host’s seriousness as he repeats his question and the contestant’s slurred delivery. It points back to late-1990s French television and revives nostalgia for TF1 game shows.

Where does the “Un visage Rubicon” meme come from?

Le Bigdil, a game show hosted by Vincent Lagaf’ on TF1 from 2 February 1998 to 23 July 2004, was adapted from the American show Let’s Make a Deal. In one episode, Lagaf’ asks a viewer named Gisèle, “Qu’est-ce qu’un visage Rubicon?” (“What is a Rubicon face?”). An older woman who seems to have been drinking, she answers in a garbled way, which cracks up the studio. The clip, regularly re-uploaded on YouTube, is often billed as one of the most legendary Bigdil moments. It was referenced again when the show returned on RMC Story in 2025.
