Where does the “Une sangria au Château Petrus” meme come from?
The meme originates from the cult scene in the 2014 French film _Barbecue_ by Joachim Lafosse. The character Jean-Mich, played by Jérôme Commandeur, mixes a bottle of Château Pétrus into a sangria, calling it the “best in the world.” The reference resurged in August 2024 after a viral video showed guests pouring multiple bottles of Pétrus into a sangria bowl at a beach party in La Guérite, near Cannes. Although the video involved different vintages (2006 and 2011) and a reported cost of €120,000, the visual parallel to the film was immediate. The phrase now serves as a cultural shorthand for any act of luxurious wastefulness or inappropriate use of premium items.
