The subreddit r/unexpectedjihad was created on 17 January 2015 and went above 53,000 subscribers by April. Within a month it held more than a thousand posts. The style echoes Thug Life edits, which also depend on a sudden punchline. Media took notice: Motherboard called it problematic, and Digg filed its post under potentially offensive content. Other videos in the genre reached several hundred thousand views in spring 2015.
