In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Fug (Rayquaza)” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22487 of the collection, and the 70th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Fug (Rayquaza)” meme mean?
Fug celebrates the joy of a mistake owned with a straight face. One typo, repeated by a whole board, turns into a handshake between insiders. People use it to refer to Rayquaza fondly, to signal they know Pokémon fandom culture, or to drop a deliberately wonky line in a serious tone. The humor comes from the clash: a majestic sky dragon introduced by a mangled word. Anyone outside the joke sees a plain error, while anyone inside it smiles at once.
Where does the “Fug (Rayquaza)” meme come from?
Rayquaza debuted in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, released in November 2002. On June 29, 2014, an image of its head began circulating with the word “Fug” where its type should be, a distortion of the German “flug”, meaning flight. The base picture came from a German giveaway of a shiny Rayquaza. The earliest archived copy was posted on October 24, 2014 on /vp/, the Pokémon board of 4chan. A whole thread then filled with dragon drawings labeled “Fug”. The joke reached GameFAQs on November 24, 2014, and TV Tropes added it to its list of Pokémon memes on January 1, 2015. Know Your Meme opened an entry in September 2016. The r/pokemon community picked it up too, and the subreddit’s Discord wiki gave it an entry in February 2016.
