What does the “White Knight” meme mean?
This meme expresses skepticism towards men who intervene in conflicts on behalf of women, often strangers. It highlights that their intervention is not selfless but calculated to seduce or gain social status within the group. The dominant emotion is distrust: these defenders are suspected of playing the chivalry card to get what they want, revealing a form of social manipulation disguised as altruism.
Where does the “White Knight” meme come from?
The expression 'White Knight' stems from the traditional literary and medieval figure of the serving knight, protector of damsels in distress. On the internet, the meaning evolved into a negative connotation linked to hidden motives. The first recorded definition in this specific context appeared on Urban Dictionary on November 3, 2004, by user 'Jake', simply describing a man rescuing a woman. However, the precise phrasing 'Internet White Knight' emerged later, notably in an article published on Something Awful on January 17, 2007. Although Know Your Meme created its entry on December 6, 2012, this date marks the official documentation of the phenomenon on the platform, not its actual emergence. The term spread gradually in online communities to describe behaviors perceived as excessive or opportunistic during social debates.
