What does the “Wombo Combo” meme mean?
The phrase captures the euphoria of a moment where a player overwhelms an opponent with no chance to defend. It expresses total dominance, speed of execution, and technical difficulty. Originally from competitive gaming, it now describes any impressive chain of events or attacks, marking a significant victory or skillful display.
Where does the “Wombo Combo” meme come from?
The meme originates from a doubles match in Super Smash Bros. Melee played on December 6, 2008, in the loser bracket semifinals of the SCSA West Coast Circuit tournament. The match featured SilentSpectre (Captain Falcon) and Tang (Fox) against Zhu and Lucky (Fox). After Lucky lost all lives, SilentSpectre and Tang rapidly chained multiple attacks against Zhu in a coordinated combination he could not defend against. The sequence was commented on by Brandon "HomeMadeWaffles" Collier, Phil DeBerry, and Joseph "Mang0" Marquez. They notably exclaimed: "Happy Feet, Wombo Combo. That ain’t Falco," while shouting during the decisive combination. The match video was uploaded to YouTube by Lumpycpu on December 8, 2008. The specific broadcast program where it aired is unknown. In its original context, "Wombo Combo" refers to this particularly impressive team attack. By extension, the expression is used to describe any fast, powerful, and hard-to-stop sequence of attacks in any game, often performed coordinately. The exact origin of the formula itself is unknown; some sources mention a possible reference to a pizza order, without establishing it as a fact.
