What does the “X Sliding In” meme mean?
The meme conveys wholesome silliness and lighthearted charm. By mimicking the famous feline obsession with cardboard containers, animators affectionately poke fun at their favorite characters. The humor relies on the satisfying, comedic timing between the character diving into the box and the audio’s final meow.
Where does the “X Sliding In” meme come from?
The concept originated in July 2009 on the Japanese video-sharing community Nico Nico Douga. Initially titled “すべりこむちぇん” (Chen sliding in), the earliest known version showcased Chen, a catgirl from the Touhou Project video game franchise. Likely inspired by the iconic sliding antics of Maru the cat, the short loop was set to a catchy Monster Hunter track known as the “squeak! squeak! squeak! meow!” dance or Kyu Kyu Kyu Nyaa. In the template, the character’s landing inside the box synchronizes precisely with the song’s meow cue.
