“Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès” meme: meaning, origin and epic card

What does the “Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès” meme mean?

The meme plays on the contrast between an omnipresent image and a lasting absence: Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès’s face is known to everyone, yet the man has never been found. People use it to joke about someone who vanishes without notice, a lost object, or a person you look for in vain, for example at a party. The humor stays distant from the tragedy, which many French people know well. Handle with tact: the case involves five deaths, and the meme should only target the disappearance, never the victims.

Where does the “Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès” meme come from?

The case begins in Nantes in April 2011. According to investigators, Agnès Dupont de Ligonnès and three of her children were killed in the night of 3 to 4 April, and her son Thomas on 5 April. The bodies of the five victims were found on 21 April 2011 under the terrace of the family home. Xavier, husband and father, was last seen on 15 April 2011 in Roquebrune-sur-Argens, in the Var, and has been sought since, notably through an Interpol blue notice. Many leads have been explored, such as the mistaken arrest of a man in Glasgow in October 2019, without the case being solved. His portrait, widely published by the media, became a web-culture reference: the man whose face is everywhere but who remains missing.
