What does the “Yakety Sax” meme mean?
This meme turns any disordered sequence into a burlesque slapstick scene. It expresses a mischievous joy in the face of failure or mayhem. Where does the “Yakety Sax” meme come from?
The original track was recorded by Boots Randolph in 1958, but it is his 1963 re-recording that achieved commercial success, reaching number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Written by Randolph and James Q. "Spider" Rich, the piece owes its global fame to The Benny Hill Show. This British comedy series made the tune its signature sound, using it systematically for fast-paced chases, grotesque falls, and rapid-fire editing. Although sources do not specify the exact date of this historical association, it cemented the track in the collective imagination as synonymous with visual farce. On the internet, this usage persisted through communities like Something Awful as early as 2002, before being massively adopted on YouTube starting in 2005 to soundtrack sports fails or domestic accidents.
