What does the “You cartonné en plein stream” meme mean?
The phrase is used to comment, tongue-in-cheek, on a livestream moment that goes sideways or does not go as planned, borrowing the vocabulary of success ironically. Saying someone is "killing it" while the situation is actually embarrassing or a fail creates a comedic contrast, typical of streaming communities that enjoy commenting on fails in real time.
Where does the “You cartonné en plein stream” meme come from?
The verb "cartonner" belongs to casual French and originally describes a big success or a standout achievement, a term common in entertainment and sports before being picked up in streaming culture. The phrase "you cartonne en plein stream" twists this positive meaning to apply it, ironically, to a livestream moment that is not an actual success, often a fail, a blunder, or an embarrassing situation filmed in front of an audience. This reversal of meaning, common in the humor of stream chats, allows people to comment on a notable moment lightly, reusing a widely known word in a deliberately mismatched context.
