In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Amen” is an epic card of the Memes FR pack, number 2644 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3496 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Amen” meme mean?
The meme plays on the contrast between a solemn religious formula and the laconic reply of a Pokémon trainer. “Amen” lands like a punchline: Ash complies without thinking, as if nothing were odd. People use it to close a pompous sentence, to approve an absurdity with confidence, or to mock a speech that takes itself too seriously. It also works as a quick “fine by me” with a touch of irony and nostalgia for the French version of the series.
Where does the “Amen” meme come from?
The card quotes the line as: “Ash, be marked with the spirit of Holy, the Gift of God!”, followed by Ash’s “AMEN”. In the French version he is called Sacha, and the French card gives the same scene under that name. The clumsy phrasing is part of the charm. It circulates both as a cartoon clip and as a written quote. French parody videos built around Pokémon, such as YTP-style edits, helped popularize this kind of off-kilter scene.
How to use the “Amen” meme
- Answer “AMEN” to a solemn announcement to deflate it.
- End an overly dramatic message with Ash’s reply.
- Quote the scene when someone launches into a grandiose speech.
- Pair a Pokémon image with the line for a nostalgic effect.
