In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “The Future Pirate King” is an epic card of the Anime Memes pack, number 46 of the collection, and the 1st best-known meme of its 66 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “The Future Pirate King” meme mean?
Calling someone “the future King of the Pirates” praises an oversized ambition stated without shame, backed by unshakeable self-belief in the face of long odds. Among One Piece fans, the phrase also celebrates Luffy in his boldest moments, standing up to opponents far stronger than him. Outside the manga, it works as a rallying cry for anyone chasing a goal most people call impossible.
Where does the “The Future Pirate King” meme come from?
Luffy debuts in the very first chapter of One Piece, “Romance Dawn”, published in 1997 in Weekly Shōnen Jump by Eiichiro Oda. As a child he is saved from a sea monster by the pirate Shanks, his idol, who loses an arm in the process and hands him his own straw hat with a promise to return it once Luffy becomes a great pirate. From there, Luffy adopts the manga's central goal, finding the treasure called One Piece that Gol D. Roger, the former King of the Pirates, left somewhere on the seas before his execution. The nickname “future King of the Pirates” follows Luffy through the manga and its anime adaptation, becoming a marker fans use to track his progress, and a line quoted outside the series for anyone aiming impossibly high.
