What does the “Ryomen Sukuna” meme mean?
Sukuna's name gets used to describe someone frightening, unpredictable, or wildly overpowered, whether literally in a Jujutsu Kaisen conversation or as an exaggerated joke. It also marks a sudden, brutal turn of events, when a seemingly ordinary character or person reveals hidden strength, the way Sukuna emerges from Itadori's body. The reference flatters anime fandom while still landing as a joke thanks to its sheer excess.
Where does the “Ryomen Sukuna” meme come from?
Ryomen Sukuna is a character from Jujutsu Kaisen, the manga by Gege Akutami serialized since 2018 in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The story introduces him as a powerful cursed sorcerer from the Heian era, who after death became such a strong curse that his body was cut into twenty fingers and sealed separately. In June 2018, high schooler Yuji Itadori swallows one of those fingers to save his friends, making him Sukuna's host and giving the curse partial control over his body. The character's name draws on a figure from Japanese folklore mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, described as a being with two opposing faces. His striking design, cruel smile, and the dramatic switch between Itadori and him made Sukuna one of the most shared antagonists among Jujutsu Kaisen fans, in both the manga and its anime adaptation.
