What does the “Attaque de Pierre Rolland !” meme mean?
The phrase comments on a sudden start, real or trivial: someone pulling ahead of the group, standing up from the table first, reviving a dead conversation. It works because the commentator’s excitement vastly outweighs the event being described, and because the rider’s full name, yelled out, lends the smallest move the gravity of a live broadcast. French speakers use it in speech and in writing, usually with no cycling involved at all.
Where does the “Attaque de Pierre Rolland !” meme come from?
Thomas Voeckler, a former rider who became a France Télévisions pundit after retiring, calls the Tour de France in a famously invested tone. Pierre Rolland, his old teammate at Europcar, is known for breakaways: he won the Alpe d’Huez stage in 2011, the day Voeckler lost the yellow jersey. During the 2020 Tour, the pundit’s shout as his former teammate went past was picked up by the press among that edition’s catchphrases, then passed around out of context. The rider himself has owned the line in interviews since retiring. The exact broadcast could not be retrieved for this page, so no precise stage date is claimed here.
