What does the “Oh Djadja” meme mean?
The clip comes back whenever someone adopts a register that is plainly not their own, especially to be seen on the right side: an official quoting a hit, a parent using teen slang, a brand imitating its customers. The meme is not aimed at the song, a massive success, but at the distance between the office and the chorus. It also works, more plainly, as a way of supporting someone loudly and a little clumsily.
Where does the “Oh Djadja” meme come from?
In spring 2024, Aya Nakamura’s possible appearance at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony was attacked by far-right identity groups, including a racist banner unfurled in the capital. Invited onto C à vous on France 5, sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra condemned the attacks, praised the singer’s work and ended up singing the chorus of “Djadja”, her best-known track. The excerpt was immediately recirculated as a short video and as a reply: the sequence, not the song, is the meme. The singer did perform at the ceremony in July 2024.
