“Baffe Gilles Verdez” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “Baffe Gilles Verdez” meme mean?

The meme is used to say that provoking someone ends badly: the panelist kept pushing and the reaction came quickly. It fits any situation where you can see the consequence of heavy-handed insistence, a joke that runs too long or repeated teasing. It is also used humorously to mimic a justified burst of anger, although real violence is no joke and only the comic effect of the televised scene is borrowed.

Where does the “Baffe Gilles Verdez” meme come from?

On 19 April 2016, during Touche pas à mon poste!, broadcast live on the French channel C8 and hosted by Cyril Hanouna, Gilles Verdez was sent, dressed as a pizza delivery man, to pester JoeyStarr backstage before his live slot on La Nouvelle Star, where the rapper was a judge. Verdez kept going despite a warning and was slapped in front of about two million viewers. He bled from the temple, cut by a ring. The French broadcasting regulator, the CSA, issued a warning against C8 on 9 May 2016.
