What does the “Ça dépasse l'entendement !” meme mean?
The line concedes defeat before a situation you refuse to analyse any further. People post it under an incomprehensible decision, a bug with no reason to exist, an administrative rule that cancels itself. Its effect comes from register: the phrase is formal, almost literary, applied to a tiny piece of nonsense. The wider the gap between the solemnity of the words and the smallness of the problem, the better the meme works; it is theatrical outrage aimed at a badly filled form.
Where does the “Ça dépasse l'entendement !” meme come from?
The phrase “ça dépasse l’entendement” long predates the meme: it is an ordinary French way of saying something escapes reason. Its online career comes from being attached to Jean-Claude, a recurring character in the videos of the French creator Benzaie, where it is delivered with an exaggerated emphasis that makes it instantly quotable. The clip then circulated as a still image and as a sound, notably in the reaction banks used on French-speaking forums. The video found for this page is a compilation from the series “La Vie de Développeur” in which the line appears in reference to the character; the exact original work could not be confirmed from a source read here.
