What does the “Crasher Squirrel” meme mean?
This meme captures the humor of absurd intrusion. The squirrel, cut out and pasted elsewhere, creates a striking contrast between its improbable presence and the seriousness or banality of the original context. It embodies the perfect 'intruder,' one that ruins or brightens a photo by its mere existence. The feeling evoked is amused surprise at this sharp-eyed animal judging the scene.
Where does the “Crasher Squirrel” meme come from?
The source image comes from a photo taken in May 2009 at Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The couple Melissa and Jackson Brandts were using a camera with a timer and remote shutter to take a picture together. Unbeknownst to them, a squirrel stood directly in front of the lens, appearing sharply in the foreground while the humans were blurry or absent. The photo was submitted in August 2009 to the weekly 'Your Shot' contest on National Geographic. It was then disseminated through press and sites like Cute Overload. The platform that first published the online version remains unknown. The term now refers to the meme consisting of superimposing this specific squirrel onto various images.
