What does the “À l’insu de mon plein gré” meme mean?
The expression is an oxymoron: you cannot do something both “without knowing” and “of your own free will”. That is what makes it funny and why people use it to poke fun at a shaky excuse. It is said jokingly after an obvious blunder: eating the whole cake, answering a message by mistake, forgetting a birthday. It works by borrowing the vocabulary of official justifications while seeming not to notice the contradiction.
Where does the “À l’insu de mon plein gré” meme come from?
In July 1998, the soigneur of the Festina cycling team, Willy Voet, was arrested and the team was thrown out of the Tour de France, setting off the Festina affair. Richard Virenque, the team’s best-known rider, was placed under formal investigation and first denied doping on purpose. Against that backdrop, Les Guignols de l’info, the satirical puppet show on Canal+, caricatured his defence by having his puppet say he doped “à l’insu de son plein gré”. The phrase was then attributed to the rider himself and has kept circulating, helped by clips of the puppet. In October 2000, at the trial, Virenque eventually admitted the facts.
