This visual embodies social awkwardness, deep shame, or disappointment after a failure. It also translates to powerlessness against inevitable events and emotional shock. Users share it to illustrate their own moments of vulnerability or inability to react to adversity.
Where does the “囧” meme come from?
Originally a rare Chinese logogram meaning 'window with patterns', its transformation into an internet symbol began in Taiwan around 2004-2005 within online communities. This adoption appears influenced by the Japanese emoticon orz, depicting a person prostrated in defeat. Diffusion spread to mainland China starting in 2008, reaching the entire Sinosphere. The specific platform and exact date of first use remain unknown. In Hong Kong, comparisons with actress Myolie Wu's 'figure-eight' eyebrows in the series *Luan Shi Jia Ren* helped popularize it. This association, sometimes nicknamed 'Hu Jiongjiong', lacks a documented exact date for this virality.
