In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Needs More JPEG” is a rare card of the Memes World series 72, number 21318 of the collection, and the 1st best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Needs More JPEG” meme mean?
This phrase expresses ironic humor regarding digital degradation. Instead of just complaining about lack of clarity, the user suggests making the problem worse. This turns a technical error (compression artifacts) into a collective joke about the poor aesthetics of shared online files.
Where does the “Needs More JPEG” meme come from?
The exact origin of this phrase remains unknown, with no source documenting a specific first publication in 2006. The expression is attested as late as December 2013 via a Reddit discussion asking for its meaning. Another conversation, dated September 2, 2014, explains that it refers to visible JPEG compression artifacts: blur, blocks, and loss of detail. The formula is ironic: facing an already highly degraded image, one pretends that compression should be increased further, sometimes sharing an intentionally worse version. The website needsmorejpeg.com was created to apply this degradation quickly. There is a possible confusion with “Do I Look Like I Know What a JPEG Is?”, a line from Hank Hill in King of the Hill, aired April 10, 2005; however, sources do not demonstrate that this scene is the origin of “Needs More JPEG”. Documented usage involves commenting on a low-quality image, GIF, or screenshot by writing “needs more jpeg”, or publishing a more compressed version. The intent is to mock visual quality by feigning it is insufficiently degraded.
