In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “En anglais! (Randy Marsh)” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 2104 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3493 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “En anglais! (Randy Marsh)” meme mean?
The line plays on the gap between a polished TV set and a guest who says out loud what people do not say, with disarming confidence. The “in English!” tacked on at the end is the finishing blow: the character thinks he is clarifying and makes everything worse. It is the show’s classic register, which paints Randy as an irresponsible adult, sure of himself and unable to gauge his words. In conversation the meme comments on an awkward moment, a slip from someone who talks without thinking, or a line that clashes totally with its context. It needs careful handling, as the joke rests on a sensitive subject.
Where does the “En anglais! (Randy Marsh)” meme come from?
Randy Marsh is a character from South Park, the series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. He appears as early as the episode “Volcano” in 1997, and Trey Parker voices him. Stan’s father, he is shown as a mostly well-meaning man whose irrational behaviour regularly sparks disasters; Parker himself calls him the biggest dingbat of the show. The scene on the card has him on a television set, asked what annoys him about other people. His blunt answer, followed by “in English!”, became a cult clip and a meme in its French dub, shared as short clips online.
