The humor serves to spread activist messages lightly and accessibly, detaching from nostalgic love songs to question power dynamics in relationships.
Where does the “Feminist Taylor Swift” meme come from?
The project began on June 12, 2013, on Twitter by Clara Beyer, a linguistics student at Brown University and founder of That Girl Magazine.[1][2][4][5] Inspired by her dual identity as a fan and a feminist, she first posted a modified version of You Belong With Me: “She wears short skirts / I wear T-shirts / Neither of us is asking for it”.[1][4] Her goal was not mockery but the positive dissemination of social awareness through humor.[11] The method involves injecting themes like consent or gender roles into popular hits. Other users later adopted this approach to send their own rewrites to the original account.[3] The exclusive platform is Twitter; no TV show or official video marks its origin.[1][4]
