Where does the “Général Kameto” meme come from?
In 2022 Reddit brought back r/place, a giant collaborative canvas where each user places one pixel at a time. The event was announced on 28 March 2022, opened on 1 April and ended on 5 April, with the canvas growing from 1,000 by 1,000 to 2,000 by 2,000 pixels. French streamers Kameto and Inoxtag had a large tricolor flag placed on the left side of the board. Kameto, helped by other creators and the r/france subreddit, coordinated attacks and defense. A Spanish-speaking coalition tried to overwrite the flag, yet France finished first in the final count with about 227,000 pixels. The title of “General” stuck as a salute to that role. The episode is known in French as the “Guerre des Pixels”.
