What does the “Végéta sous la pluie” meme mean?
Vegeta is a proud character who rarely shows weakness. Seeing him motionless in the rain, humbled, gives the scene emotional weight: pride cracking in silence. Internet users use it to express melancholy, heartbreak, failure or the feeling of having lost everything. The image also captions trivial situations to blow them up into melodrama. It pairs well with sad music, which adds to the dramatic and slightly comic effect.
Where does the “Végéta sous la pluie” meme come from?
The scene comes from the Dragon Ball Z universe, where Vegeta appears in a striking moment of defeat and bitterness. It was isolated as video, notably in edits set to Dido's song “Stan”, as several online video titles show. That pairing of a proud warrior with melancholic music fueled its widespread reuse. Since then the image has become one of the best-known symbols of sadness in meme culture, in French and English alike.
