What does the “How To Draw an Owl” meme mean?
This visual highlights the absurdity of truncated explanations. By showing an impossible logical leap from simple shapes to a detailed owl, it expresses frustration with incomplete or simplistic instructions. It is used to point out that complex processes cannot be reduced to just an introduction and a conclusion without a middle ground.
Where does the “How To Draw an Owl” meme come from?
The author of this satirical image remains unknown. The first documented occurrence dates back to August 21, 2010, when the card was shared in the r/Pics subreddit on Reddit. Prior to this specific date, it had already circulated on Tumblr blogs, as well as on FunnyJunk, BuzzFeed, and DeviantArt during August 2010. The original image features two text panels: “draw some simple circles” followed by “draw the rest of the owl.” A vulgar variant replacing the second phrase with “draw the rest of the fucking owl” also gained popularity. Although a resemblance to a comic strip featuring The Tick has been noted, no evidence confirms it as the definitive origin of the viral phenomenon.
